Unsuspecting NYC straphanger viciously attacked: video

A startling new video shows the moment a man puts an unsuspecting straphanger in a chokehold at a Manhattan subway stop and attacks the woman before stealing her purse.

The surveillance footage, posted by Progressive Action TV, captures the vicious assault on a 23-year-old woman who was standing on the northbound D platform at the 34th Street-Herald Square station at about 4 a.m. on Monday.

The just-over-a-minute clip shows the unknown attacker coming up on his victim from behind as she stood near the edge of the platform,

He then drags her about 10 feet before throwing her to the ground and punches her multiple times, the video shows.

Cops released images of the suspect Tuesday leaving the subway station.

The attack comes as crime — as well as ridership — returns to pre-pandemic levels on the transit system.

Last week, cops reported 60 incidents of serious crimes compared to 33 in the same week in 2020, when NYC saw a historically low subway population.

There has been a 27 percent uptick in felony assaults on the subway so far this year compared to 2019, a more accurate time comparison based on ridership rather than 2020, NYPD data shows.

So far this year, 408 serious assaults were reported compared to 313 in 2019, according to police data.

Misdemeanor assaults, though, are down nearly the same percentage.
